If there's one thing we've learned over the past few years with with Maine Coon owners and breeders, it that they all struggle with the same problem. Finding a cat tree that is strong enough to withstand the sheer weight that the largest domestic cat breed can throw at it. 3 Years ago when approached by a Maine Coon breeder from Turtle Valley British Columbia, we got to have our first go at making a tree (or crib in our terms haha) that fit for Maine Coons. We managed to come up with a design that has the two most important things for cats this size: big beds, and a big base.
The "Maine Tree" we called it (creative I know), sports a massive 42" x 24" base that is 10" tall. We knew an over the top base was necessary to ensure a tree that is 7ft tall wouldn't go toppling over if it has 4+ cats zooming all over it. The Maine Tree runs goes for $1350CAD, our Mini Maine Tree (below), goes for $1085CAD, this model is 6ft tall.
One of our concerns when making these models was how big to make the beds. I actually recently asked one of the breeders I frequently work with to see how the size of the beds was for her Maine Coons. I was actually worried they may be a bit small, but she said other wise.
"They're more than adequate, often multiple cats sleeping [are] sleeping on a platform. But even for the bigger ones, there's lots of room." For reference our beds are on a 18"x18" piece of plywood. This plywood gets a 5 sided border that act as an almost rounded curve for them to curl up against.
We also took into account the fact that not everybody has room for a massive 5ft long tree, so we do have other options available. Our Extension tree comes in 4 different variations: 5ft, 6ft, and then those respective versions with a Stone House added. These models are very popular among all cat owners, but of course also work great for Maine Coon owners as we make sure to double up the thickness of the base, as well as use our signature XL beds. These models range from $475-650CAD.
